The new buzzword in the wedding industry is ‘Destination Weddings’. As flights have grown more affordable, and as the Internet has made communication across the world so easy, it’s no longer difficult to plan a wedding from the other side of the world.
While I was living in the UK, I was amazed at how much couples paid for their weddings – it costs a small fortune to tie the knot. And it invariably rains! Nearly every wedding we photographed was accompanied by an opening of the heavens. Many Europeans I met were escaping the long winter and venturing over to Africa to have their dream wedding at a fraction of the price they would pay in Europe.
South Africa is a remarkably diverse country, home to the majestic mountains of the Drakensburg and the Cape; hundreds of kilometres of amazing beaches; acres of wine farms just outside of Cape Town; the enchanting desert plains of the Karoo; and of course the quintessential African savannah.
Then there’s the rest of the continent. Having driven from London to Cape Town through Africa, I’ve been amazed at the diversity of peoples and cultures from North to South. Kenya and Tanzania are home to amazing exclusive bush lodges as well as stunning palm-fringed beaches (near the exotic islands of Lamu, Kilwa and Zanzibar); Mozambique is pure paradise and has some of the most stunning beaches I’ve seen; Zimbabwe is still an amazing destination with some incredible venues on the Zambezi River and in numerous game lodges at a fraction of the price of other African countries.
One of the only obstacles to organizing a wedding from far away is finding someone who can create a beautiful record of your dream wedding. I’m that someone! As a South African, I’m available to shoot anywhere in the country or any destination on the continent or further afield. You’ll need to cover my travelling expenses in addition to my usual fee if it’s outside SA.
If you’re based in the UK, there’s more good news. I shoot weddings for so many South Africans living in the UK that I’ve arranged a special number – you can get through to me for the price of a local phone call (you have to love technology!):
